These physician-strength peels use carefully balanced combinations of alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, and resorcinol to exfoliate skin at controlled depths. The treatment works by dissolving bonds between dead cells, allowing controlled shedding of damaged surface layers.
SkinMedica® offers three peel strengths. Illuminize Peel is the gentlest option for first-time users or sensitive skin, providing surface exfoliation with virtually no peeling. Vitalize Peel is the medium-strength option that addresses fine lines, sun damage, and texture with noticeable peeling over 3-5 days. Rejuvenize Peel is the strongest formulation for advanced concerns, including deeper wrinkles and significant sun damage.

Your peel begins with a consultation where we select the appropriate strength. Your face is thoroughly cleansed, and the peel solution is applied. You’ll feel tingling, warming, or mild stinging. The solution remains on the skin for a specific time, then is neutralized or removed. Sessions take about 60 minutes.
Before your peel, avoid retinoids for several days and sun exposure. After treatment, keep skin moisturized, wear SPF 30+, don’t pick at peeling skin, use gentle cleansers, avoid makeup until peeling begins, skip active ingredients until healed, and avoid heavy exercise for 24-48 hours.
Peeling varies by formulation. Illuminize creates minimal visible peeling—just light flaking. Vitalize produces moderate sheet-like peeling over 3-5 days. Rejuvenize causes the most dramatic shedding. All formulations provide excellent results, even if visible peeling is minimal. The chemical exfoliation and cellular stimulation occur beneath the surface regardless of how much you visibly peel.
You’ll experience sensations from mild tingling to moderate stinging depending on peel strength, but discomfort is temporary. Illuminize typically causes only light tingling, while Vitalize creates more noticeable stinging. Rejuvenize can cause more intense sensations, but remains tolerable. Discomfort lasts only during treatment, and relief is immediate once we neutralize the peel.
Illuminize can be repeated every 2-4 weeks. Vitalize should be spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Rejuvenize requires 8-12 weeks between sessions. We’ll recommend an appropriate schedule during consultation based on your specific skin concerns and treatment goals.
